If you are planning on transferring from a 4-year college or community college, it is important to have a strategy and plan ahead, so you don’t fall through the gap.  The following tips which should be done prior to submitting your application will enable you to  have a smoother transition:

  1. Research colleges ahead of time to confirm that they have your major and visit the campus.
  2. Meet with an Admissions Advisor early and often to confirm which credits will transfer, the curriculum pathway, and the timeline for completion of your degree. Also, inquire about articulation/partnerships they have with the transfer school.  Review Transferology to determine what classes will transfer.
  3. Meet with the Financial Aid Advisor to confirm the cost of attendance, any additional paperwork that needs to be submitted, and out-of-pocket expenses.  If you received aid at your previous college, confirm whether you will be able to receive it at the transfer school. Students eligible for work-study should have an understanding of the application process.
  4. Research the scholarship page of the college for transfer scholarships and outside scholarships.  I highly recommend jlvcollegecounseling.com for scholarships for continuing college students.
  5. Community College students who will transfer in as juniors should meet with an advisor in the Career Center to discuss internship opportunities.
  6. Students graduating from a Community College  transferring into a 4-year college should check the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.  They will provide up to $55,000 for you to attend the college of your choice.  Your income needs to be less than $95,000 and you need a 3.5 GPA.
