If you are planning on transferring from a 4-year college or community college, it is important to have a strategy and plan ahead, so you don’t fall through the gap. The following tips which should be done prior to submitting your application will enable you to have a smoother transition:
- Research colleges ahead of time to confirm that they have your major and visit the campus.
- Meet with an Admissions Advisor early and often to confirm which credits will transfer, the curriculum pathway, and the timeline for completion of your degree. Also, inquire about articulation/partnerships they have with the transfer school. Review Transferology to determine what classes will transfer.
- Meet with the Financial Aid Advisor to confirm the cost of attendance, any additional paperwork that needs to be submitted, and out-of-pocket expenses. If you received aid at your previous college, confirm whether you will be able to receive it at the transfer school. Students eligible for work-study should have an understanding of the application process.
- Research the scholarship page of the college for transfer scholarships and outside scholarships. I highly recommend jlvcollegecounseling.com for scholarships for continuing college students.
- Community College students who will transfer in as juniors should meet with an advisor in the Career Center to discuss internship opportunities.
- Students graduating from a Community College transferring into a 4-year college should check the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. They will provide up to $55,000 for you to attend the college of your choice. Your income needs to be less than $95,000 and you need a 3.5 GPA.
