Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the campus of Rutgers University-Newark in Newark, New Jersey, which is an “urban research university” with a student body of 13,000 and according to the U.S. News and World Report, “the most diverse national university in the U.S.” Part of their mission is to focus on social justice, equity, social mobility, and innovation. Notable alumni are Ozzie Nelson, Ramy Youssef, Louis J. Freeh, and Esther Salas.
The college has 40 undergraduate majors and 50 plus graduate and professional degree programs. Popular majors are Logistics, Materials and Supply Chain Management, Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Accounting. Their Supply Chain Management program is ranked #3 in the country. Cross-registration is offered with the New Jersey Institute of Technology which is adjacent to the campus. High-achieving students have the opportunity to apply to two honors programs, the Honors College and the Honors Living and Learning Community. In addition to offering scholarship opportunities to honors students, traditional students are offered numerous scholarship opportunities which pay up to full tuition.
They have over 100 student organizations providing numerous opportunities for students to volunteer and develop their leadership skills. Athletically, they are classified as Division III offering 16 varsity sports. The Career Development Center offers excellent support and resources to assist students in fulfilling their career goals.
A hidden gem on their campus is the Institute of Jazz Studies which has the largest and most comprehensive collection of jazz archives and related materials in the world, that’s right, in the world! They have over 100,000 sound recordings, CD’s, LP’s, 78 rpm, 6,000 books and over 30 instruments used by prominent musicians. If you are a jazz enthusiast, this is definitely a place to check out.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will add Rutgers-Newark to my highly recommended list.
