Many colleges are test-optional. Standardized test scores and grades will matter less since many students are receiving Pass/Fail grades. Without these measurable achievements, what other factors will admissions counselors consider in determining if you are a good fit for their campus? More focus and emphasis will be placed on essays, letters of recommendation, character, demonstrated interest and activities.
Essays
Personal statements and supplemental essays will get more attention.
- Who are you, what do you want to do and why?
- What is your story? What are your short and long-term goals?
- Appointments for interviews, videos, and graded papers may also be requested.
- Be prepared to share how you have been affected by Covid-19.
Letters of Recommendation
Recommendation letters will carry more weight. These letters should address your character, qualities and characteristics that are unique to you.
- Are you kind?
- Are you respectful?
- How do you interact with others?
- Are you a hard worker?
- Have you demonstrated leadership?
- How do you manage your time?
Demonstrated Interest
It is vital that you show interest in the colleges you hope to attend.
- Research college websites.
- Register for virtual tours, interest sessions.
- Communicate with your admissions counselor via e-mail and respond in a timely manner.
Activities Resume
It is important to be involved in extracurricular and volunteer activities beginning freshman year of high school.
- Prepare a listing of your awards, honors, and accomplishments from freshman year to date.
- Find creative ways to volunteer and be involved in meaningful activities.
- If you had difficulty finding ways to volunteer, show how you have supported your family and community.
- How are you managing your self-care? What are you doing to maintain or improve your social-emotional health?
Students will need to be more proactive and assertive through this process. The important thing is for you to share who you are, where you are going and how you plan to get there.
