5 Tips for Volunteering

Colleges and scholarship organizations are impressed by students who make an effort to give back to their community.  Volunteering is a way for students to separate themselves from the competitive pack.   You should begin your volunteer efforts in your freshman year of high school.   There are numerous opportunities to volunteer.  The question is what will you do?

I believe “charity begins at home”.

  • The first place to look for opportunities is your home.  What can you do to help support your family?  What extra chores can you do to provide support?
  • What can you do to support your neighbors, particularly the senior citizens and people with disabilities that live in your neighborhood? This could be as simple and safe as raking leaves or shoveling snow.
  •  Look for virtual opportunities to tutor younger kids or your younger siblings who need help with reading or math.  Storytelling is a huge hit with the K-3 group and can be lots of fun.
  • Check out local food pantries and food drives.
  • Give blood.
